The sympathetic branch drives activation, the fight, flight, or freeze response that shows up under stress. The parasympathetic branch supports rest, digestion, and recovery. Regulation isn't about staying permanently calm. It's about being able to move between these states as circumstances actually require, rather than getting stuck in chronic activation or chronic shutdown.

For a lot of us, especially anyone carrying trauma or living under sustained stress, that flexibility gets worn down. The nervous system starts defaulting to alert, even when nothing in the present moment actually calls for it.

Why breath is such a direct lever here‍ ‍

Breath is one of the only autonomic processes you can consciously influence. Slower, longer exhales stimulate the vagus nerve, a key pathway of the parasympathetic system, and support what's known as vagal tone, a marker of how efficiently your nervous system can shift between activation and calm. A 2023 meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials, published in Scientific Reports, found breathwork practices associated with meaningfully lower self-reported stress compared to control groups, alongside measurable changes in heart rate variability, one of the clearest physiological markers of nervous system regulation.

Different practices for different needs

Gentle, daily regulation

Simple techniques like diaphragmatic breathing or box breathing are useful, low-intensity tools for everyday moments, before a hard conversation, during a stressful commute, or as part of a wind-down routine.

Deeper, guided exploration

More active practices, like conscious connected breathing, work with the nervous system more intensely, often bringing stored tension or emotion to the surface so it can genuinely move rather than staying held. This kind of work benefits enormously from a trauma-informed facilitator who understands how to pace intensity safely.

A note on what regulation isn't‍ ‍

It's worth naming something important here. Nervous system regulation isn't about forcing yourself into a permanent state of calm, and treating any strong reaction as a malfunction to be corrected. A racing heart in a genuinely threatening situation isn't dysregulation, it's an accurate response. Regulation is about restoring flexibility and choice, not suppressing every signal your body sends you.

How to start

  1. Notice your baseline. Before changing anything, spend a minute simply noticing your current breath and state.

  2. Start with the exhale. Lengthening your exhale is often the simplest, most immediate way to signal safety to your nervous system.

  3. Build consistency over intensity. A few minutes daily tends to build more lasting regulation than one long, occasional session.

  4. Work with a facilitator for deeper work. If you're navigating significant trauma or dysregulation, guided support matters more than going it alone.

  5. Track how you feel, not just how you breathe. Regulation shows up in sleep, mood, and how quickly you recover from stress, not only in the moment of practice.

It isn't about achieving a perfectly calm nervous system

There's no fixed, ideal state you're supposed to permanently live in, and no failure in still feeling activated some days. This work is about building capacity and choice over time, not chasing a version of yourself that never feels stress at all.

That distinction matters a great deal in our decolonial approach to breathwork, which questions the idea that nervous system "neutrality" should be the universal goal for every body, regardless of what that body has actually lived through.
