Certified Breathwork Facilitator Training: What to Expect in Our Program

If you’re considering becoming a certified breathwork facilitator, you probably already know how powerful breathwork can be. Breathwork has the potential to bridge the gap between the conscious and subconscious, allowing for deep emotional and physical healing. But not all breathwork training programs offer the same level of training, with many falling short of minimum requirements in terms of curriculum, ethics, safety, and context.

At Inspire Breathwork, we believe that being a facilitator goes beyond guiding someone through breath techniques. It’s about understanding the roots of breathwork, the political and social contexts that impact our well-being, and the trauma-informed practices needed to hold space ethically. Our 2-year facilitator training is designed to equip you not just with practical skills, but with a deep, embodied understanding of breathwork in a modern context.

The breathwork facilitator training also includes a year where you build your own breathwork practice, with hands-on experience of building a business, as well as a research thesis that contributes to the revolution of breathwork from Wellness and into health.

In this article, we’ll take you through what makes our program unique, what you’ll learn, and how it sets you up to become a responsible, skilled, and confident breathwork facilitator.

Introduction

Why Inspire Breathwork Training Is Different

The Inspire Breathwork Facilitator Training is unlike any other breathwork certification program. Breathwork itself is already considered niche, but our approach goes even deeper, bringing breathwork out of the wellness space and into healthcare, social justice, and community healing.

Our program was developed by Hannah Kendaru, who has been practicing breathwork for over 12 years and has worked in the wellness industry for the past decade. With her extensive experience, she has witnessed the gaps in current training practices and has crafted a program that addresses these shortcomings with integrity and depth.

Hannah Kendaru is also a director of UKBA (UK Breathwork Association) and so has written the professional and ethical standards that are followed by breathwork training centres and facilitators in the UK and across the world.

The goal of Inspire Breathwork is not just to train facilitators but to create a revolution within the industry- shifting breathwork from a commercialised wellness trend to a respected, professional practice grounded in ethics and social responsibility.

Breathwork That Meets the Needs of Today’s World

Our training program is built on the understanding that breathwork needs to address what makes us sick in today’s society. We are living in a world where:

  • There is a rise in mental and physical illness.

  • Healthcare systems are failing to meet demands—long waiting times, austerity measures, and burned-out staff.

  • Social structures are fragmented, with loss of community and increased isolation.

  • Technology and automation reduce face-to-face connection, leading to a sense of disconnection.

In this context, breathwork has the potential to be deeply healing—but only if it is rooted in an understanding of modern struggles and how they shape our bodies and minds.

What You Will Learn

A trauma-informed approach to breathwork includes some key fundamental shifts in how breathwork is facilitated. It is important for breathwork facilitators to train, practice and understand the different approaches, because simply saying that their have a trauma-informed approach can create a false sense for potential participants, and can cause more harm and is unethical.

Trauma-informed care in breathwork looks like:

1. A Trauma-Informed Approach

Our program prioritises trauma-informed care because breathwork is powerful enough to trigger deep emotional releases. Trauma is not just about past events but how the body continues to respond to perceived threats.

Without the right training, facilitators can inadvertently re-traumatise clients, especially when focusing solely on cathartic emotional releases without considering safety and containment. We teach you how to:

  • Hold space safely and ethically, even when powerful emotions arise.

  • Recognise trauma responses and respond with compassion and support.

  • Guide clients back to safety when the experience becomes overwhelming.

Being trauma-informed also means acknowledging that trauma is pervasive, not rare. We teach you to normalise trauma responses without judgment, creating a space where people feel safe and seen, not broken or out of place.

2. The Accurate History and Lineage of Breathwork

One of the most significant issues in the wellness industry is the co-opting and commercialisation of ancient practices. In our training, we don’t just teach breath techniques—we teach the foundations and history of breathwork to honour its roots.

Breathwork is not just a modern trend; it has existed in various cultures for thousands of years. We explore the lineages that have shaped breath practices, examining how they have been taken out of context and commercialised in Western wellness spaces.

You will also be encouraged to explore your own ancestral breath practices, understanding where your lineage connects with breathwork traditions. This approach not only deepens your personal practice but ensures that your facilitation respects the cultural significance of breathwork.

3. Deep Personal Inner Journey

Being a breathwork facilitator is not just about guiding others- it’s also about doing your own work. The first 12 weeks of our program focus on a deep personal journey of self-exploration and healing.

We believe that medicine people need to heal themselves first. During this period, you will:

  • Dive into your personal challenges and limiting beliefs.

  • Work through your own traumas and unresolved emotions.

  • Learn to see your body as a site of activism, where healing yourself is a radical act of resistance against a culture that teaches us to ignore or suppress our pain.

We challenge you to understand how supremacy culture teaches us to nurture voices of self-doubt and criticism- and how to unlearn this conditioning. This journey is about reclaiming your own power and learning to hold space for others from a place of embodied knowledge.

4. A Decolonial Approach to Healing

Colonial conditioning impacts how we perceive ourselves and each other. It tells us to distrust our own bodies and prioritise productivity over presence. Our training challenges this mindset by teaching you to:

  • Honour your own lived experiences and integrate them into your practice.

  • Understand how supremacy culture manifests in wellness spaces and work actively to dismantle it.

  • Develop practices that foster empowerment rather than disempowerment.

Breathwork is not just about personal liberation—it’s about collective healing. We believe that decolonial breathwork can change how we relate to ourselves, each other, and the world.

How Our Program Is Structured

Our 2-year training program is intensive and comprehensive. You will be guided through:

  • Deep theoretical learning balanced with hands-on practice.

  • Mentorship and peer support to refine your facilitation skills.

  • Ethical practices that ground your work in integrity and respect.

You will also learn how to bring breathwork into diverse spaces—from healthcare settings to community gatherings—equipping you to make a tangible impact in your community.
